Between 1955 and 1959, the PRR purchased 270 of these units from EMD. When ran in pairs (as was commonly the practice) they were often run back-to-back, with the long nose pointing outwards.
As delivered, they were painted DGLE, with Clarendon 'Pennsylvania' on the side, and small numbers under the cab windows. Later variations had several PRR keystones added, on the noses, and on the side of the long and short hoods. Several variations of this existed, with the 'Pennsylvania' eventually being painted over completely by the time of the Penn-Central merger.
Large gothic numbers replaced the smaller Clarendon ones on the cabs. The 'Trainphone' antennas were removed sometime in the early 60's. This version has all the keystones, but has yet to lose its 'Pennsylvania' lettering.
