Mallard Runs Again
4468 Mallard is a Class A4 4-6-2 steam locomotive that was built in Doncaster, England in the year of 1938. While on her trials on 3 July 1938,a small slight downward grade of Stoke Bank, south of Grantham on the ECML, caused the locomotive to reach the speeds of 126 mph (about 203 km/h). Since then, 4468 Mallard broke the world's fastest speed record for steam locomotive. It was about 2.5 mph more than what the German DRG Class 05 had, with its speed of 124.5 mph (200.4 km/h).
Mallard 4468 went on more trails on the same grade to confirm that it was the fastest steam locomotive in the world, and since it was confirm, Mallard 4468 was given a gleaming gold plaque on its side. The plaque reads 'On 3 July 1938, this locomotive attained a world speed record for steam traction of 126 miles per hour.
The special even that happen in 1938, about 20 years later, it just settled down to being another steam locomotive, so all the celebration has died. By the end of their time, the A4s were dirty and were unkempt and the glamour had lift.
As diesel electric locomotives started to come into service, the steam locomotives, mostly the Mallard steam locomotives, quietly ended its working life. All of the A4s continued for a few more years longer until there was no need for the A4s; therefore, make their final journeys to the scrap yards.
Mallard 4468 on the other hand, was spared from the scrap yards and instead was treated for full restoration by the National Railway Museum in the year of 1980s. The Mallard is the museum's biggest draw.
So what happens in this session is a real honour. National Museum agreed to have a steam excursion and the best part is that you get to drive her from Hitchin to Peterborough, stopping at all stations so passengers can experience her when 4468 Mallard was running. Make sure not to disappoint anyone on this excellent day.
Enjoy the experience and have a safe and enjoyable trip.
