NSW SRA HPC 401

Constructed in 1938 by the NSWGR Eveleigh Workshops, the 400 class railmotors were designed to provide a cheap, fast and attractive service in outlying areas. Numbering only four(401, 402, 403 and 404) they commenced their career in Dubbo, travelling to Gwabegar, Coonamble and Molong. 402 and 403 were sent to Narrandera, improving services to Tocumwal, Hay, Hillston and Junee, normally hauling up to two 500 class trailers. Soon 401 and 404 would join them at Narrandera where they stayed for 30 years.

In 1971, 401, 402 and 403 (404 previously destroyed by fire) were moved to the state's north west, where they would stay until the end of their career. 401 was based at Narrabri running to Walgett, 402 to Inverell from Moree and Werris Creek became home to 403 travelling to Tamworth and Barraba. 1983 saw road coaches replace the 400 class railmotors from regular service.

401 was overhauled in September 1971 like the other 2 400 Class railmotors, and was sent to Moree. To accomodate both first and second class passengers, a dwarf partition was installed behind the 4 seats opposite the toilet (not quite the effort spent on 402). In 1982 401 recieved the reverse livery, and remained the only 400 Class to recieve it. Before retirement, 401 was based at Narrabri and ran to Walgett, towing trailers 504 and 508. Although officially retired on 25 November 1983, 401 was pushed into service during December 1983 and February 1984 after heavy rains made the road between Narrabri and Walgett impassable, before being purchased by the Dorrigo Steam Railway. 401 served NSW diligently for almost 46 years.
