Tonopah 2-8-0

Baldwin 2-8-0s built February 1905 for the Tonopah Railroad. 55-inch drivers, driver wheelbase 14 feet 8 inches, total wheelbase 23 feet 5 inches. The Tonopah Railroad had been conceived as narrow gauge, but in the first two months of operation, freight backed up so badly that it was predicted to take four months to clear on the slower C&C and TRR leg of the journey. This situation was untenable, so the C&C promptly started laying standard gauge track to Tonopah Junction, and the TRR ordered these, along with two passenger engines and a switcher. They were 'Common Standard' designs, with dozens of shared parts between the three types. By the time the Goldfield railroad was ready to be built, standard gauge was clearly the way to go, and they obtained one more of each matching design. The Bullfrog-Goldfield followed suit in 1906 with two more of each design, so that from November 1906, the new Tonopah and Goldfield Railroad had access to six standard 2-8-0s, five standard 4-6-0s, and four standard 0-6-0s. Five more 2-8-0s arrived in 1907, with three being a larger type. The first engines to go, in a sense, were the B-G locomotives, when the T&G spurned its unwanted child, to the T&T. T&T would pawn off the B-G to the LV&T in 1914, and the T&G would dispose of its three large 2-8-0s due to lack of traffic. The second class to go in its entirety were the 0-6-0s, which disappeared by 1920. The last 4-6-0 was retired in 1926, and these stock 2-8-0s closed the railroad in 1948.
