V & T loco no 20(Tahoe) ca 1911-1917

Virginia & Truckee No. 20(Tahoe) as she appeared in the 1870's.
'Tahoe' was one of four near identical engines ordered from the Baldwin Locomotive Works between 1874 and 1876 for the Virginia & Truckee Railroad. In her initial run, H. M. Yeringtion reported sister engine 'Truckee' could pull 8 full cars up to Virginia City and he hoped to increase the load to nine. In 1876 she broke a crank pin while double-heading at Scales, starting a long tendency of breaking her cylinder heads. She survived longest on the V&T, recieving Tower couplers in 1902, at which point the other large moguls(Truckee, Santiago and Merrimac) were being sold. She was shopped again in 1907, this time for conversion to coal firing, which she had until 1911 when she was converted for oil. Hoping to fix her habit of breaking cylinder heads, the shops had her cylinders adjusted, but did not find the cause until 1922 when, filling in for No. 27, she broke two cylinder heads. She was rushed to the shops and repaired, and once No. 27 was back in service she was fitted with a new Double Laird crosshead to fix her habit. She was returned to service in 1923 and worked until 1926, when she was retired to the Carson enginehouse until 1942 when she was sold to Clifford C. Bong.
She went to the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission in 1967 and is currently on display at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania.
