Boxcar, Pan Am Railways, 50 ft, 2 door
What happened to world reknown Pan Am World Airways? Did one of it's jets collide with a Boston & Maine Railroad Boxcar? Well symbolically and corporately - Yes. Pan Am was puchased by Guilford Transportation Industries in 1998, the contemporary of the Boston & Maine and the Maine Central Railroads, based in N. Billerica, Massachusetts (USA). In this time of ever-expanding freight service in the US, here's a story of airway to railway. Guilford decided to use the power of the Pan Am name on its fleet of boxcars, even painting on the lettering Pan Am Railways, and to my eyes, attempting to keep a remnant of those Boston & Maine boxcar colors. Since the release of the original version of this asset in 2006, the Guilford has made the complete transformation to 'Pan Am Railways' and has painted its locomotives with this Pan Am paint scheme as well. Back in the skies of 2006, the Pan Am logo was flying again for none other than Boston-Maine Airways. Confused yet? Things get more complicated from here, as the power of the Pan Am name gets further licensed out.
The US ABC television network has now produced a series set in the original Pan Am World Airways era. Now that you can see it today on the rails of New England and can see it on TV, can you actually take a Pan Am flight today?? Well the answer is yes, if you take a southerly perspective, there are actually 2 venues. Although the Boston-Maine 'Clipper Connection' airline ceased operations in 2008, a remnant survives in the Domican Republic as 'Pan Am Dominicana.' Back in the US, Pan American Airways Incorporated is being ressurected by a logistics company who promises to announce passenger and latin american cargo service out of Brownsville, Texas.
