SOU H1c 2839 Engine

This is former Canadian Pacific H1c, 'Royal Hudson,' no. 2839. Built for hauling passengers at high speeds over the CP, this class of engine was the only one of its kind to be royally designated with permission from the Reigning Majesties of the United Kingdom (thanks to sister engine 2850).

2839 is presented here circa 1977-1980, when leased to the Southern Railway to operate on their steam program. The 'Beer Can,' as christened by SOU enginemen, was only cosmetically altered in a conservative way; by adding SOU lettering practices while adhering to CPR's scheme. While working as a speedy mainline performer, 2839 lacked the pulling power to lug long and heavy excursion consists over the hilly terrain of the Southeast. Ultimately, the engine was returned to its owners in November 1980, and only operated sporadically in Pennsylvania. Today, 2839 sits on static display at the Nethercutt Collection in Sylmar, CA.
