np jumped into the high horsepower race in the mid-1960s when EMD introduced the 3600 HP 20 cylinder SD45. The NP crews loved them, nicknaming the locomotives bearcats, because; as the story goes, there wasn't a train they couldn't pull across the rugged Bitteroot and Cascade ranges in the Pacific Northwest. One of the oddities in the NP units is the extra side windows, much like the U-boats had, and the red mars light in the nose of the short hood.
