AN 930 Class t1b 931 1981+

The SAR 930 Class is a variation of the ALCO DL500 built under license by AE Goodwin at their factory in Auburn, NSW between 1955 and 1967. The ALCO DL500 itself is based off an earlier ALCO design, the FA. The SAR's first 6 930s had one cab at the front of the locomotive, while the latter 31 had a cab at both ends. They displaced steam locomotives in regular service and while usually used on mainline work, also saw use on branch lines. In March 1978, all were included in the transfer of the South Australian Railways to the Federal Government operated Australian National. Following conversion of the Adelaide to Port Pirie line to standard gauge in 1982, a few were converted for use on the standard gauge network. When through running on the Adelaide to Melbourne line commenced in the 1980s, they began operating all the way to Melbourne. A few were also borrowed by V/line on intrastate trains in Victoria. In 1986, a new computer system used by AN resulted in class member 930 being renumbered to 967, as the system could not recognise the difference between a loco that has the exact same number as its own class. Withdrawals of the 930 class also started in 1986, as more powerful locomotives entered service and different 930s began to suffer reliability issues and failures. Class leader 930 (at the time, 967) was requested by the Port Dock Railway Museum to be preserved as it was the first ALCO locomotive built under license in Australia, and thus was placed in the museum in 1990. It is the only preserved single cab 930 Class locomotive. In 1992, Steamranger purchased 958 from AN, with AN requesting all logos to be painted over. Initially, a solid block of yellow was painted on the front nose of the locomotive to cover up the AN logo, but was later reverted to 2 separate yellow stripes, thought it instead continued fully from the top to the bottom of the nose instead of having a break where the logo was. Steamranger also placed a piping shrike on the front nose. In 1993, 961 was painted for AN's new tourist train, The Explorer. this service went to a few of the remaining locations accessible on the BG network, but the train was later ended by new management at AN who were not interested in running it. 961 returned permanently to freight service. By this time, only 961 and 963 remained in service. The pair were used on different works trains to upgrade the Adelaide to Melbourne line in preparation for its conversion to standard gauge. In March 1995, 963 led the last BG Overland out of Adelaide and into Adelaide. 963 was given to Steamranger and was transferred to their Victor Harbor line in April 1995, shortly before gauge conversion of the Adelaide - Melbourne line took place. 963 could not be transferred to any of Steamranger's depots as the line between Littlehampton and Mt Barker was cut off for the installation of the 85ft electric turntable at Mt Barker, so 963 was stored in the tunnel underneath the South Eastern Freeway to protect it from the weather. Vandals found the loco a couple months later and smashed windows to gain access to the locomotive, and set off fire extinguishers in the locomotive. It was then moved near the Cameron Road crossing in Mt Barker near houses and street lights. The windows were covered with steel plates, though the locomotive was covered in graffiti. The engine was started every few weeks until the fuel was taken out in case it was contaminated by vandals. Once works on the turntable at Mt Barker were complete, shunter locomotive 350 hauled 963 to the depot. 963 is not operational and has had a few parts taken out of it to be put in 958. In 1997, 961 was included in the sale of Australian National's freight operations to Australian Southern Railroad. It was later converted to standard gauge. In 2001, it was sold to Silverton Rail who renumbered it as 44s1. in 2005, it passed to Chicago Freight Car Leasing Australia, and returned to working local trains in SA as it was leased by Bowmans Rail for their Balco service until 2007. It then entered storage at Islington Workshops, and was sold to th
