ANR 900 class BG

The 900 class were a class of 10 diesel locomotives built by Islington Railway Workshops for the South Australian Railways between 1951 and 1953.
The 900 class were the first mainline diesels to enter service on the Australian mainline, with class leader 900 'Lady Norrie' entering service on 12 September 1951. They were however not the first to operate on the Australian mainland, with this title belonging to the Commonwealth Railways locomotive GM1 which underwent trials starting on 24 August 1951.
They were powered by the English Electric 16 SVT prime mover, generating 1760hp. Their weight of 126t and maximum axle load of 21.3t restricted them to running mostly on the heavier laid mainlines to Serviceton, Port Pirie, and Peterborough.
Like the CR GM Class, they had a rounded front nose which lead to the locomotives falling under the 'streamliner' category as described by rail enthusiasts, with its less rounded design being used/inspired by the ALCO PA and FA locomotives used in the USA. The later 930 class would also use a nose inspired by that design.
The locomotives enjoyed a long working life, but were relegated to lighter duties as newer diesel locomotives arrived.
With AN taking over the remaining non-suburban operations in 1978, they were gradually withdrawn as more locomotives became available, with last revenue runs occuring in 1985.
900 joined the collection at the Mile End Railway Museum later that year and has since been transferred to the National Railway Museum in Port Adelaide. 909 and 907 were restored to their original livery and operated trips with Steamranger until the early-mid 90s as less broad gauge destinations became available for tours and Steamranger was eventually cut off from the remaining broad gauge network, due to the gauge conversion of the Adelaide - Melbourne line severing the Victor Harbor line from the Adelaide metropolitan network.
While the 900s were capable of operating on the Victor Harbor line, their weight incurred more track maintenance costs for the line which used 80lbs rail, and so they were sidelined. They were sold to Australian Locomotive and Railway Carriage company at Tailem Bend in the mid 2000s, and were then sold to a private owner. 909 and 907 remain at Tailem Bend, with 907 donating parts for 909 which is undergoing gauge conversion to standard gauge.
Thanks to the original creator of the trainz 900s, electro for allowing me to release these modified models. The textures have received an upgrade and also take advantage of the tbumpenv mesh material, changing the appearance of the locomotive in game. The e-spec, engine sound, and horn sound have been changed to closer resemble the physics and sound of the real-life 900s.
