CLMW SD40-2

Built between January 1972 and January 1997, the Electro-Motive Division SD40-2 is a 3,000 horsepower diesel electric road switcher locomotive. With over 4,000 units sold, the SD40-2 is one of EMD's best selling models, only being outsold by the GP9. This number does not include the hundreds of rebuilds to SD40-2 standards, from models such as the SD45. The Cleveland and Midwestern purchased their own fleet of SD40-2s in 1975, and the new locomotives quickly displaced the aging F7A and F7B units used as primary road freight power. The SD40-2s are well liked among Cleveland and Midwestern crews, as they combine the best of both the SW7 and the F7 into one package. The road switcher body allows good visibility in both directions, and the short hood contains crew comfort facilities for long trips. These locomotives can be found almost everywhere on the CLMW system, and are reliable power with their 16-645E3 prime movers.
