CLMW SW7

Built between October 1949 and January 1951, the Electro-Motive Division SW7 is a 1,200 horsepower diesel electric end cab switcher locomotive. Over five hundred were built between the base SW7 model as well as the TR4 cow-calf variant. Most were built at EMD plant number 3 in Cleveland, Ohio. As such, it was a short trip to a new home when the Cleveland, Lorain and Midwestern purchased a batch in 1949. Serving as both yard power and light road switchers, the SW7s made themselves at home on the railroad, performing admirably in their assigned duties. As they aged, the decision was made in 1974 that the SW7s would be upgraded under Locomotive LEAP, or Life Expectancy Addition Project. When the SW7s came in for their shop rotations, their roots-blown 12-567s would be removed and replaced with the turbocharged 8-645E3C. This would boost their horsepower from the nominal 1,200 horsepower to 1,500 horsepower, making them mechanically similar to a GP15T. Though they had their horsepower increased, the SW7s would retain their 1200 series road numbers as well as their company designation of 'ESF-12', to help distinguish them from the 1500 series F-units.
