CLMW FA-1

The ALCO FA-1 is a 1,500 horsepower (later uprated to 1,600 horsepower) diesel electric cab unit, built for road freight service. First offered in 1946, the FA-1 found several customers, including the nascent Cleveland, Lorain and Midwestern, who bought several FA-1s in 1946 to use as their first generation of road power. The FA-1s proved rather unimpressive in road freight service to the Cleveland, Lorain and Midwestern, and quickly found themselves stored when EMD F7s arrived on the railroad, ordered in greater numbers. The ten CLMW FA-1s would sit on a storage track for over seventy years, only occasionally being ran and visiting the shops to keep them in one piece. Despite their EMD counterparts receiving significant rebuilds including a brand new prime mover, the FA-1s would see no such upgrades. However, the FA-1s would be pulled from the storage track in June of 2026 and given new coats of paint, including two in America 250 schemes, and all ten for would be placed on an indefinite, no-cost lease with the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, with the intent of lowering costs on the CVSR by alleviating the need to lease power from leasing services. The FA-1s find themselves among brethren ALCO/MLW at the CVSR, and the CLMW stockpile of ALCO spare parts has been made available to both its own FA-1s on excursion service as well as the CVSR's FPA-4s and sole FPB-4, ensuring that these historic locomotives will be around for years to come.
