These locomotivesw worked on mainline freight services throughout NSW. They were also used at times on major passenger services including the Indian Pacific, regional expresses and mail trains.

The following units were modified to single cab control position and renumbered 35xx: 4505, 4507, 4513, 4518, 4527, 4532

The following were sold to Silverton: 4502 as 45s3, 4528 as 45s2 and 4532(3532) as 45s1.

The following were sold to Austrac: 4503, 4505(3505) and 4537 as 103 (leased to BHP)

Four are preserved: 4501, 4514, 4520 and 4521.

These locos have appeared in more than ten different colour schemes. This is the Candy Red with a white top, used with 4504.

Seven similar locomotives make up the 600 Class of the South Australian Railways, entering service in 1965.
