SLSF 162500 series boxcar

Between 1926 and 1930, the St. Louis - San Francisco (FRISCO) acquired 6,500 composite boxcars of the Howe Truss 'Defacto Stadard' design. These cars were built by three manufacturers, American Car & Foundry, General American Transportation and Pullman-Standard. The 1926 orders were numbered in the 147000 through 149499 while the later orders were numbered 160000 through 163999. While the cars were of the same basic design, details and equipment varied depending on manufacturer on the first 3,500 cars. However, cars 161000 through 163999 were nearly identical, with the differences between manufacturers being limited to the width of the sheathing planks and the position of the tack boards. Several hundred of these cars were retrofitted with steel sides in the 1950s. These rebuilds remained in service until 1974. At least one member of the class has been preserved, 162739 located at the Railroad Museum of Oklahoma.

This model represents an American Car & Foundry car from the 1930 order as it looked before receiving AB brakes or steel sides. Dates on the stencils are appropriate for the late 1940s.
