ACL 76000 Series Flatcar

The Atlantic Coast Line (ACL) acquired around 1,700 of these 40 ton flat cars from American Car & Foundry (AC&F) in 1916 and 1917. The cars were built to a standard AC&F design introduced in the early 1900s and built into the 1920s. By the end of the 1910s, slightly larger (42 foot long and 50 ton capacity) flats had mostly supplanted this design, making the ACL's order among the last.

Initially, the ACL's cars included P-11 general service flatcars (73700-74069 and 76000-76999,) P-11-A log cars (74075-74099) and P-11-C pulpwood flats (74100-74399.) By 1926, about 300 of the general service flatcars had been converted to gondolas in the 79700-79999 series. The gondolas were converted back to P-11 flats by 1938. Between 1938 and 1954, the vast majority of the general service P-11s were converted to pulpwood flats (classes P-11-E, P-11-H, P-11-J and W-3,) dedicated logging flats (P-11-F and P-11-G,) demoted to maintenance of way service or retired. In 1954, only 21 general service, 209 logging, and 652 pulpwood variants remained on the roster. As of 1966, the fleet had dwindled to 7 general service, 64 log cars and 71 pulpwood cars. No revenue examples were listed in the 1972 SCL equipment list, although many remained in maintenance of way at that time.

Although they were built with K triple valves, official equipment lists indicate 70% of the cars were equipped with AB brakes by 1946. Most cars rebuilt in the late 1940s or early 1950s were also upgraded with newer AAR U-section trucks. This model represents a car with its original trucks but the newer brake system.
