NYC 497000 Series Flatcar

THe New York Central Lines acquired 2,050 of these 40 ton flat cars from American Car & Foundry (AC&F) in 1907. The cars were divided among four subsidiaries, with the New York Central & Hudson River receiving the largest fleet at 1,000 cars (32500-33499.) The cars were built to a standard AC&F design introduced in the early 1900s and built into the 1920s.

The NYC Lines cars were classified as Lot 208-F. Starting in 1916, cars from the subsidiaries were given NYC reporting marks and renumbered into the 496000 (all but NYC&HR) and 497000 (NYC&HR) number series. As larger (both in length and capacity) flatcars became commonplace in the late 1910s and early 1920s, these cars became obsolete. By 1926, 1,297 members of Lot 208-F were in service on the NYC. This dwindled to 130 cars by 1938. All were off the roster by 1954. Most likely, some examples remained in maintenance of way service for some time, but no information regarding the quantity or lifespan of these cars could be located.

One example has survived, number 497862 at the Rochester & Gennessee Valley Railroad Museum. This car was acquired from Eastman Kodak, suggesting some of these cars were sold off to customers for in-plant service. This car has AB brakes, but it is unclear if this conversion was performed by NYC or Kodak. As the AB brake was introduced in the mid-1930s and the cars were being phased out on the NYC, it seems more likely this was done by Kodak. Based on this, the model uses a K brake system.
