C&O class H8 tender

Coupled with the largest engine on the Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O,) the tenders accompanying the Alleghanies were the largest tenders on the line. The C&O's design specifications for the engines required the engine and tender to fit onto existing turntables, limiting overall length to about 115 feet. To achieve the desired water capacity and fit existing turntables, the tenders had an unusually high deck, placing much weight on the rear of the tender. Due to the odd weight distribution, the tender was provided with one three-axle Buckeye truck under the coal bunk and a four-axle Buckeye truck under the cistern. While the C&O's 1948 engines were copies of the Virginian AG class, the tenders were unchanged from the earlier orders.
