VGN class AG

The Virginian (VGN) ordered a group of eight copies of the C&O H-8 in 1945. The VGN engines were lighter than the C&O engines, sacrificing heating surface and sand capacity to reduce weight. These efforts brought the engine weight down to 753,000 pounds from the C&O's 771,300 pounds. On the VGN, these engines were known as Blue Ridges rather than Alleghanies and were designated as class AG (Articulated, Series G.) The eight AGs were retired by 1955. None survived into preservation.

It is worth noting that although these engines were designed for fast freight service, the VGN typically used them as drag power, moving long coal trains of up to 11,500 tons over mountains at relatively low speeds. Dynamometer tests of the engines at speed showed the cylinders were capable of delivering 7,500 horsepower at 40 miles per hour, speeds in line with fast freight service. The boiler was capable of providing 8,000 horsepower, illustrating the Super Power goal of matching boiler and cylinder horsepower.
