D&RG Class 40 #15 Raton

This model is based on Denver & Rio Grande #15, a Baldwin 8-16D 2-6-0. The 8-16Ds were assigned class 40 by the D&RG. This locomotive was named Raton when built. It was sold to a dealer in May 1891. It may have become New Mexico Lumber Company's #2 later. The model represents the engine as it might have looked in the mid 1880s. The eight Class 40 2-6-0s were used as main freight power when introduced, but were displaced by the Class 56 2-8-0s which were introduced in 1877. They saw helper service for a short time, but then were downgraded to branchline power. All were off the roster by 1900.
