ATSF 3160 Class 2-8-2

These large 2-8-2s were built for the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe starting in 1917. In comparison to the previous 3128 class, the 3160s rode on taller drivers, had significantly higher steam capacity, were 20 tons heavier and significantly more powerful due to larger cylinders. As originally designed, the 3160s were supposed to have a maximum axle loading of 58,500 pounds. This was apparently inadequate as the target axle loading was increased to 60,000 pounds in 1918.

The Santa Fe continued receiving 3160s throughout World War I, with the final delivery coming in 1920. Over this time, valve gear changed from Baker to Walscharets, but no other significant changes to the design were made. Total production included 128 engines (3160 to 3287.) Another 101 identical engines were constructed as the 4000 class between 1921 and 1926.

The 4000 series included a single-chamber Elesco feedwater pump from the factory. As initially delivered, both the 3160 and 4000 series had a single sand dome. By the mid-1930s, it appears all engines had been refitted with two-chamber Elesco pumps and a second sand dome.

As one of the most common classes of engines in the Santa Fe fleet, 3160s and 4000s could be found almost anywhere on the system. Coal burning examples typically operated on the east portion of the system while oil burners typically operated on the west portion of the system. According to steamlocomotive.com, both classes remained intact until 1950. All examples of both classes were retired between 1950 and 1955.

No 3160s or 4000s were preserved. However, one example of each class does exist. 3167 and 4076 were used in an attempt to protect a bridge over the Kaw River in Topeka, Kansas. This attempt was unsuccessful, and both engines as well as the spans of the bridge they were protecting were washed into the river. No efforts were made to locate or salvage the engines.

In 'Uncle Sam's Locomotives,' Eugene Huddleston points to the 3160 as a possible source for the USRA Light 2-8-2 design of 1918. However, the only two specifications in common were the grate area (67 square feet) and driver size (63 inches.) The 3160 does share the same cylinder bore and stroke as the Heavy 2-8-2 design. However, in all other respects, the 3160 was larger than even the Heavy.
