In 1903, the Denver & Rio Grande purchased a group of 2-8-2 Mikados from the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philidephia, PA. Initially classified as Class 125s, the engines would receive their better known designation of K-27 in 1924. The fifteen Class 125 2-8-2s were equipped with Vauclain Compound cylinders. The compound cylinders used steam twice, first in the small high pressure cylinders, then in the big low pressure cylinders. This method was advertised as an effective way to increase the fuel and water economy of a steam locomotive. In practice, the extra maintainance nullified any cost savings of the compound system. The D&RG rebuilt all members of the 125 class between 1907 and 1909 with simple D slide valve cylinders. In the 1920s, most of the class was rebuilt with piston valve cylinders and Walscharets valve gear. There were four exceptions: 450, 451, 457, and 460. All four were scrapped in January 1939. 450, 451, and 457 had been stored for over five years before then, but 460 was in service around Salida until at least 1938.
