T&NO E-40 Tender
Tender for Texas & New Orleans E-40 class 4-4-0 marked in the Southern Pacific Lines scheme. The San Antonio & Aransas Pass ordered the 60 Class 4-4-0s from Baldwin in 1922 without tenders. Older tenders sporting wood frames were assigned to the class on delivery. These tenders matched those behind SA&AP's older 2-6-0s and 2-8-0s, so the precise pedigree is uncertain. After the T&NO merger, folio drawings indicate the tenders were classified 50-R-1 and numbered 20 units (4 behind the E-40 class and 16 behind other former SA&AP engines.)
At least as late as 1928, the E-40s' tenders rode on the original wood frames. By the 1940s, the tenders had been rebuilt with steel frames. The tenders behind 220 and 221 were further modified with larger, 2,500 gallon oil bunks at that time. However, the tenders behind 222 and 223 retained the original, smaller oil bunks until retirement. This model retains the smaller oil bunk appropriate for most former SA&AP power on the T&NO. After engine 260 (ex-220, nee-60) was sold to the Louisiana Eastern in the 1950s, the original SA&AP tender appears to have been scrapped and replaced with a more modern tender.
