36ng South Park Cooke Mogul

Built in 1884 by Cooke for the Denver, South Park, & Pacific, 71 was the third of five 2-6-0 moguls. Purchased for use on passenger and freight trains, they were used on passenger trains more often than freight. They were used on every part of the South Park line, from Denver to Gunnison and up to Leadville.
After the C&S acquired the former South Park lines, all of the Cooke 2-6-0s were rebuilt. Very little was left from their original arrangement. The changes included a new boiler, a modified tender, a new cab, a new stack and Lord spark arrestor, new cylinders, larger aircompressor and airtanks, and boiler tube pilots. The Lord spark arrestors were replaced by Ridgeway Beartrap spark arrestors in 1918.
C&S 9, former DSP&P 72, is the last remaining DSP&P Cooke 2-6-0. The Colorado Historical Society has disassembled C&S #9 with the intention of returning it to service on the Georgetown Loop.
This model represents 71 as she appeared upon delivery to the DSP&P in 1884. These colors are based those in an article in the December 1998 issue of Model Railroader, as color photographs from the 1880s are notoriously difficult to find.
