36ng South Park Cooke Mogul Classic
Classic series: Error-free in TRS19, converted to Trainzmesh with PBR materials, but not significantly upgraded from original 2005 release.
Built in 1884 by Cooke for the Denver, South Park, & Pacific, 71 was the third of five 2-6-0 moguls. Purchased for use on passenger and freight trains, they were used on passenger trains more often than freight. They were used on every part of the South Park line, from Denver to Gunnison and up to Leadville.
After the C&S acquired the former South Park lines, all of the Cooke 2-6-0s were rebuilt. Very little was left from their original arrangement. The changes included a new boiler, a modified tender, a new cab, a new stack and Lord spark arrestor, new cylinders, larger aircompressor and airtanks, and boiler tube pilots. The Lord spark arrestors were replaced by Ridgeway Beartrap spark arrestors in 1918.
C&S 9, former DSP&P 72, is the last remaining DSP&P Cooke 2-6-0. The Colorado Historical Society has disassembled C&S #9 with the intention of returning it to service on the Georgetown Loop. *EDIT*: After this model's 2005 release, C&S 9 would operate on the Georgetown Loop railroad for one season in 2006. It has been on static display in Breckinridge, CO since 2007.
This model represents 71 as she appeared upon delivery to the DSP&P in 1884. *EDIT*: The original release had blue paint based on a Model Railroader magazine article. For this rerelease, I opted for black. Reasoning - DSP&P was owned by Union Pacific at the time, and contemporary (1885) UP power was ordered in black.
