SD16 GM&P 801

The big brothers to the GP7 and GP9, the SD7 and SD9 were EMD's first forays into C-C power. They were kinda like heavy GP7s or 9s with extra traction motors. Because of low horsepower, SD7s and SD9s were not really great for fast freight but were good at pulling heavy, slow freights or transferring cuts of cars between yards. The early SDs did find acceptance on several major railroads, but not to the same extent as their smaller siblings. It would take about 15 years and 1000 more horsepower before C-C power became commonplace. Still, SD7/9s found niches in heavy transfer service, where some can still be found in service on major railroads today. This model represents an SD7 or SD9 which went through a fictional capital rebuild program. While inspired by the Seaboard Coast Line GP16 program, similar rebuilds were performed by many railroads and many rebuilds ply the rails of shortlines and class ones across the continent.
