Holyhead Breakwater Railway
Original work by 2995valliant, completed by tmz06003. The Holyhead Breakwater Railway was a self contained system isolated from the main BR network. The Holyhead Breakwater was opened in 1873 and originally broad gauge track was laid along it's length. The line was converted to standard gauge in 1911. The purpose of the route was to transport large stones, slates and blocks along the Holyhead Breakwater so they could be dumped alongside by a travelling crane installed in 1934 to strengthen the structure. Originally the stone was quarried at the nearby Holyhead Mountain Quarry which was also rail served, later the stone was brought in by lorry from Penrhyn Quarry. Originally steam locomotives operated on the Breakwater until Fowler ED6 took over in 1966. Latterly from 1967 the line was operated by two Andrew Barclay class 01 diesels, numbered D2954 and D2955 at the time they were transferred to the Breakwater Railway. D2954 was out of use by 1971 and provided a source of spares for D2955. However both locos were renumbered into the TOPS computer scheme in 1974, D2954 becoming 01001 and D2955 becoming 01002. The last known run of a class 01 on the Breakwater was in July 1980, and the line was closed in the same year and most of the track was lifted. Both class 01s were cut up outside the Breakwater shed in February 1982.
